What to look for in a basic Automotive GPS

Prices of basic or entry level automotive gps units have dropped dramatically in the last couple of years. At the same time they have become faster, easier to use and more accurate. As a result sales have exploded. Yet to most people the vast array of models, features and prices is a bit overwhelming. Here are the most important features to look for in a basic gps.

Pre-loaded Maps. . Most GPS units today come with pre-loaded maps and a POI (point of Interest) database. They are ready to use out of the box. However, there are still some models available that are not, buy one and you are looking at perhaps as much as a couple hours setup time.

Automatic Routing. Any automotive gps unit worth its salt will automatically plan a route for you when you type in an address or select a destination from the POI database. Usually they will offer options like shortest route vs. fastest time.

Voice Prompts. Your gps unit should provide you turn by turn directions to direct you to your destination. It should have the option to accomplish this with voice prompts. The unit should announce turns well before they arrive and repeat the instructions as you approach the turn.

Touch Screen. Touch screen units are generally much easier to use as they allow more intuitive menus.

2D or 3D maps. Your gps should be able to display both types of maps. 2D maps are better for planning or looking at an overall layout. 3D maps are easier to follow as you are traveling.

Map and POI updates. Your gps device should include some method of keeping it up to date such as SD cards or thru a usb computer interface.

Adequate Screen size. The screen should be large enough and bright enough that you can safely glance at it while driving. Screens smaller than 3.5 inches are just too small to be safely viewed while driving. Wide screens ranging from 4-5 inches are ideal.

These are just a few of the many features available in gps units today. As long as you buy a unit that has these features you should be happy with its ability to get you from place to place. You should have no trouble finding several units from different manufacturers that incorporate all of these feature in price ranges of $300-$400
